Neck Lift: Say So Long to Saggy Skin

Did you know that the hanging, excess skin between a cow’s neck and chin is called a dewlap? Unfortunately, humans can develop the same thing! Fluctuation in weight, heredity, and, of course, age can all play a part.   • Laser treatments. Primarily used for sun-damaged skin—something we see a lot in Florida—this is a resurfacing technique that tightens and restores damaged tissues with a concentrated light beam that encourages cell regrowth.
  • Neck liposuction. Sometimes if you’ve lost weight, your neck takes a while to catch up! Liposuction can remove fatty tissues in your neck and chin. Often this is coupled with the removal of excess skin, a procedure called cervicoplasty.
  • Neck cord correction. Medically known as platysmaplasty, this tightens the vertical muscle banding, or cords, that have lost tone and become loose and stretched out.
  • Surgical neck lift. A more significant tightening of the skin and underlying muscles and tissues, this can be performed with or without a facelift for an overall restoration of your youthful appearance.

Bouncing Back

In most cases, recovery takes about a week or two. You should adhere to at-home care instructions and plan on wearing comfortable, loose fitting clothes for a while—button-downed, no pullover shirts! Ice packs can be used to ease any pain or swelling, and you may need to apply antibacterial ointment to incision sites. Grab a pillow or two to keep your head in a comfy position. This is a great opportunity to take a load off and rest! Don’t rush back in to your activities. You should avoid sports for at least three weeks, then gradually increase your intensity level.
