You’ve probably seen the commercials with the giant stack of comforters, vacuum-packed into a nice compact size that fits under your bed. Well, that’s exactly the idea behind liposuction, except instead of getting rid of excess air, it takes away excess fat. Whether you’ve gained weight after having a baby, your metabolism is slowing down with age, or you have a love-hate relationship—love food, hate exercise—liposuction can help shrink you down to a more compact, contoured version of you.
Reclaiming Your Contours
We adults can accumulate fat like a kid accumulates toys, and while children may feel like they are constantly picking up their rooms, we often feel as though we are constantly counting calories or trying the latest workout trend. Unfortunately, sometimes diet and exercise just isn’t enough to drop those extra pounds. Luckily Dr. Lisa J. Learn can help (with the fat, not the toys). By performing a liposuction procedure, we can reshape and slim problem areas on your body like thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, upper arms, or any place else where extra weight is weighing you down.
Extracting the Excess
Here’s how it works: small, inconspicuous incisions are made in the areas to be treated. A thin, hollow tube is inserted and with a controlled back and forth motion, it loosens the excess fat within. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out through the tube with an attached surgical vacuum or syringe. Farewell fatty deposits. Hello sculpted, streamlined body.
There are different types of procedures, including tumescent and ultrasound assisted.
Revealing a Sleeker New You
You will experience some swelling and fluid retention at first, but as that subsides, your renewed contours will be revealed. Expect to wear an elastic bandage or compression garment over the treatment area following the procedure to keep the swelling to a minimum. Temporary drains may be necessary to remove any excess fluid or blood. You will be given specific post-surgery instructions, such as how to care for surgical sites, and medication information. You must follow these directions closely to ensure a successful recovery. The time it takes to recover depends on the type of procedure performed.
Knowing the Limitations
This procedure is not a cure-all for obesity, nor is it a substitute for diet and exercise. In fact, if you want the results to remain, you must maintain a healthy lifestyle including weight management and a fitness routine. Unfortunately, liposuction is not an effective treatment for the dimpled effects of cellulite, or saggy and loose skin, as these are surface problems that would have to be addressed separately.
If you are fighting the battle of the bulge and seem to be losing no matter how many sit-ups you do and turnip greens you eat, call Dr. Lisa J. Learn at (954) 380-8411 and ask about our liposuction procedure. You can also stop by for a consultation at our Fort Lauderdale, FL location. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about streamlining your shape and getting back to feeling great and looking even greater!
