What Are the Uses & Benefits of Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation can offer many cosmetic benefits, including:

  • Added volume
  • Enhanced shape
  • Improved structure

In other words, lip augmentation isn’t just for those who want bigger lips. They’re a great option if your lips have become deflated or uneven, by adding a little extra volume just in the spots where it’s needed and smoothing everything out.

Lip Augmentation Using Dermal Fillers

Dermal filler injections are the most common and popular way to reshape and add volume to lips. Dr. Learn specializes in using Restylane, an FDA-approved product made primarily from hyaluronic acid, for lip augmentation. While the word “acid” might seem scary to some, this is actually a gel-like sugar naturally found in abundant quantities in the skin. Restylane is safer and longer-lasting than traditional collagen fillers, with a very low risk of any rejection or serious side effects. It’s highly compatible with the body and will ultimately be broken down naturally.

What Can I Expect From the Treatment Procedure Itself?

Lip augmentation using dermal fillers can be performed outpatient in about 30 minutes.

First, Dr. Learn will apply a topical numbing cream over your lips to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort during the injections. Next, small needles will be used to inject the dermal fillers into your lips. You can expect to experience some swelling, but it should be mild. There’s no downtime after the procedure.

You can walk right out the door and go back to your normal, daily routine—although strenuous exercise might be discouraged for a couple of weeks. We do recommend you apply ice to the area for about 15 minutes at a time periodically to minimize swelling, and that you avoid wearing lipstick or other lip products for a time following the procedure. After about 2-4 days, swelling should diminish and you will be able to see the full, natural results of the procedure. Some minor settling is possible for up to 2 weeks after the injections.

How Long Do the Results Last?

For a lip augmentation using dermal fillers, you can expect the results to last around 12 to 18 months on average. Over time, your body will gradually and safely break down the filler (as it does naturally occurring hyaluronic acid) and your lips will return to their previous size and shape.

We are happy to discuss an optimal schedule for maintenance appointments so you can maintain your new lip shape over the longer term.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Mild side effects may include light swelling or bruising, redness and tenderness near the injection site, or light bleeding from the injection sites. Additionally, if you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters around the lips, they may be reactivated for a time. However, these symptoms all tend to be mild and pass within a few days. More serious complications are much rarer. If you experience severe or prolonged swelling or bruising, visible lumps or asymmetry in the lips, ulceration, or signs of an allergic reaction or infection, call us immediately.

Alternatives to Dermal Fillers

Although dermal fillers are the most popular lip augmentation procedure, there are other alternatives. Fat injections might be considered, especially if you are also undergoing a liposuction or other cosmetic procedure where fat is removed and can be reused. Lip implants made from soft silicone or biodegradable materials are another option, especially if you need to add a lot of volume.

While these alternatives have some advantages, including potentially longer-lasting results, they also have additional risks and drawbacks. Dermal fillers will be the best choice in most cases, but we are happy to go over all your options and make our best recommendations depending on your circumstances.
