No One’s Happy When Skies Are Gray

Stretches at sunsetWell, it’s officially winter time, which means much of the country is cold, blustery, snowy, and gray—day after day after day—but not here! No wonder all the snowbirds take flight this time of year and flock to our sunshine state. Monotonous gray skies can bring you down and a little bit of sun exposure can go a long way toward beating those winter blues!

Yes, there’s a lot of talk about the damage sun can cause, but while all that’s true, there is a positive side to sunny skies—they make you happy! Studies show that regular exposure to vitamin D-rich rays of sunshine helps improve your mood. That’s because when the sun shines on you, your brain releases a hormone called serotonin which is associated with lifting your spirits and helping you feel calm and focused. There are other benefits of sun as well.

Catching a moderate amount of rays can actually prevent some cancers, build strong bones, lower your risk of certain conditions as well as your blood pressure, and improve the quality of your sleep! Wow, which way to the beach?  Of course, the key is moderation. Overexposure can be dangerous and damaging, so play it smart—don’t stay out there all day long, and always be sure to use sunscreen.

If you’re concerned about sun damage, or years of sunning yourself have made you happy but have taken their toll on your once youthful skin as well, Dr. Lisa J. Learn is here to help! Procedures like laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, face lifts, and Botox® injections can all restore your skin’s smooth and youthful glow, leaving you wrinkle-free—and happy as can be!
